Generous and Practical JUST A SECOND Program Is a Win-Win for Blakehurst Residents and Staff
Moving to a senior living community can be an exciting time full of new beginnings, new possibilities, and new friends, but before their new adventure starts, new residents need to decide what to bring and what to leave behind.
At Blakehurst — Towson, Md.’s premier Life Plan Community — people often discover after they’ve moved in that they still have many more household items than they need, use, or want. “Once they experience the freedom of a no-maintenance lifestyle for themselves, try our various dining options, explore all the amenities on our 40-acre campus, and get involved in the activities and clubs that interest them, they look around and think, ‘I don’t really need all that extra bakeware,’” laughs Community Life Services Director Debra Bartgis.
A new initiative called JUST A SECOND is helping residents turn that second round of downsizing into something joyful and meaningful that benefits the entire community.
The program was created as a way for generous residents to donate their gently used household items to a dedicated on-campus shop, where they are offered at no cost to Blakehurst employees.
The idea was originally introduced by resident Thom Rinker, with fellow residents Judy Van Dyke and John Greene helping to bring the vision to life. Resident volunteers and staff worked together to transform an outside garage into an organized showroom, complete with racks and display tables.
Since the official donation drive kickoff in October 2025, donations have continued to grow, with residents across the community participating. The JUST A SECOND shop opened in April and proved to be an instant success.
“Residents have enthusiastically embraced the program, donating everything from artwork, puzzles, knick-knacks, and games, to cooking supplies, lamps, and even small pieces of furniture,” says Executive Director Lonny Blessing. “It feels good to know that these useful items will have a second life in a new home where they will be truly appreciated, instead of just gathering dust in a cabinet or closet. Our team members also enjoy browsing for new treasures that they can bring home to their own families.”
More than just a donation program, JUST A SECOND is an excellent example of the warm spirit of generosity and connection that defines life at Blakehurst.
