At Blakehurst, nature is a daily source of joy, inspiration, and wellness. Tucked into 40 acres of beautifully maintained grounds in Towson, Md., this senior living Life Plan Community offers residents a rare blend of tranquil green space, walkable paths, and leafy trees and gardens—just minutes from the heart of downtown.
The flourishing landscape isn’t just beautiful — it’s intentionally curated. Blakehurst is a Level I Certified Arboretum, recognized by ArbNet and The Morton Arboretum, a distinction that reflects the community’s longstanding dedication to conservation and landscape stewardship.
A Living Landscape
Walk through the Blakehurst campus and you’ll find more than 50 labeled species of trees, including delicate Japanese maples, towering sweet gums, and majestic scarlet oaks. Thoughtful seasonal landscaping keeps the campus colorful year-round. A nature trail winds throughout the back of the property. The new memorial tree walk is already a favorite destination for residents seeking reflection, beauty, and a moment of calm.
The community’s extensive collection of plants continues to grow. Last year alone, Blakehurst received over 300 native trees from Baltimore County and planted 500 daffodil bulbs to brighten its landscape.
Every spring, Blakehurst marks Arbor Day with a celebration that brings residents and staff together. This year, the event included a ceremonial planting of three Yellowwood trees. Residents read poetry, and shared the history of Arbor Day at Blakehurst and information about the Yellowwood tree.
Nature, Wellness, and Connection
The connection to nature runs deep at Blakehurst. Residents regularly participate in tree walks, outdoor classes, and community gardening. A vibrant landscape committee helps shape planting plans and contributes ideas to the campus’s ongoing beautification. Dining areas and common spaces offer views of mature trees and seasonal gardens, creating a serene and inspiring backdrop for everyday life.
Outdoor walking paths invite daily movement and mindfulness. Whether strolling among the trees or birdwatching along the walking trail, residents experience firsthand the mental and physical benefits of life lived close to nature—including reduced stress and anxiety, better sleep, improved mood, lowered blood pressure, and enhanced cognitive function.
For those who enjoy a little sport, play, and competition with their fresh air, Blakehurst offers a putting green and a croquet court. Both venues have proven to be very popular with residents.
Wellness with Roots in All Aspects of Life at Blakehurst
In addition to its thriving outdoor environment, Blakehurst offers a robust and holistic approach to resident well-being through its HealthyLife® Services program. This innovative model supports eight dimensions of wellness — physical, social, emotional, intellectual, vocational, environmental, spiritual, and comprehensive health services — through a range of enriching activities, educational programs, and personalized care. From fitness classes and interfaith services to creative arts, safety workshops, and volunteer opportunities, Blakehurst empowers residents to live purposefully and independently while supporting the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.
A Beautiful Community Inside and Out
Blakehurst’s commitment to excellence extends indoors, where recent renovations have elevated the community’s amenities to new heights. The $16-million transformation now gives the community three distinct venues: the Chesapeake fine dining room, the casual Terrace Bistro, and the brand-new relaxed Ridge Pub. Each offers unique menus and atmospheres. The community has also upgraded several common areas, including the auditorium, pool, and lobby.
