Blakehurst Celebrates Creativity and Community with Art Exhibit in Partnership with Loyola Blakefield High School

Blakehurst, a senior living community in Towson, MD, is proudly hosting a special exhibit featuring works by talented students from nearby Loyola Blakefield High School. The show is up now and will run through April 17.
A diverse collection of paintings, drawings, and mixed-media pieces by the emerging artists is currently featured in the community’s rotunda gallery, sparking lively conversation and reflection. For residents, engaging with young artists at the opening reception offered fresh inspiration. For students, sharing their work in a professional gallery setting provides valuable confidence and perspective.
The exhibit, the second in a planned annual series, is the result of a partnership between the prestigious school and the premier lifeplan community. “We’re thrilled to be working with Loyola Blakefield High School on these exhibitions, and we’re looking to expand the partnership to include a mentoring aspect in the future,” explains Blakehurst Executive Director Lonny Blessing. “Blakehurst is home to many accomplished artists.”

The community has become a natural gathering place for artists and art lovers alike. Its spacious, light-filled studio offers an inviting environment where residents can pursue long-standing passions or explore new forms of expression for the first time. Whether someone has painted for decades or has always wondered what it might be like to pick up a brush, the community provides both encouragement and opportunity.
Workshops, informal studio sessions, and resident-led initiatives make it easy to try something new. Equally important is the sense of camaraderie that develops when neighbors share ideas, celebrate progress, and inspire one another. Many residents find that artistic pursuits open doors to other interests as well — from writing and music to photography, travel, and volunteerism.
Creativity as Part of Whole-Person Wellness
Artistic engagement at Blakehurst is just one aspect of the community’s 8 Dimensions of Wellness program, which supports holistic well-being by nurturing emotional, vocational, social, intellectual, environmental, spiritual, and physical wellness. (The 8 th dimension is Blakehurst’s Health Services.) Creative expression improves emotional wellness by offering an outlet for reflection and stress relief. It also contributes to intellectual and vocational wellness by encouraging learning, experimentation, and problem-solving. Participating in art classes or gallery events supports social wellness by fostering friendships and shared experiences. The meditative nature of creating and admiring art is good for the soul and spiritual wellness. Even physical wellness can benefit, as activities like painting, sculpting, or crafting help maintain fine motor skills and coordination.
And if art isn’t a resident’s passion, Blakehurst offers plenty of other opportunities for fun, companionship, lifelong learning, growing, discovering, and finding purpose through a full schedule of classes, parties, games, clubs, performances, outings, lectures, workshops, special events, and volunteering opportunities.
