Giving Back at Blakehurst Is a Year-Round Way of Life

At Blakehurst, generosity is more than something that happens during the holidays or on special occasions. It’s part of the culture — something residents and team members carry with them every day.

Set in the heart of Towson, Md., the senior living community is known for its boutique-hotel feel, beautiful 40-acre campus, and vibrant lifestyle, but it is also defined by the kindness, engagement, and purpose residents bring to the community every single day.

Contributing to the greater good is beneficial to both the giver and the recipient. Using lifelong skills nurtures vocational wellness, while emotional, social, and spiritual wellness is enriched through connection, compassion, and shared experiences. At Blakehurst, giving back is both a personal fulfillment and a cornerstone of community life.

Giving Time, Energy, and Encouragement

Many Blakehurst residents choose to stay deeply connected to the greater Baltimore region through service-focused activities. Each month, residents gather to prepare sandwiches for local organizations, turning a hands-on project into a social, mission-driven experience.

Residents and team members also work side by side on Alzheimer’s Association fundraising throughout the year. Initiatives include themed luncheons, kindness campaigns, and the beloved Wall of Gratitude, where handwritten messages of hope and appreciation shine light on the impact of togetherness. A recent SunChips kindness challenge encouraged residents to donate $1, attaching a bright, encouraging note to a snack bag to be gifted — one for each of Blakehurst’s 650 residents and staff.

Blakehurst also celebrates World Parkinson’s Day with great enthusiasm. During the annual National Institute for Fitness and Sport Pump It for Parkinson’s NuStep-A-Thon, residents and team members join forces to reach a goal of 135,000 steps — a target they proudly hit, earning live coverage from WBAL-TV. This event contributes to NIFS’s national ten-million-step challenge honoring the ten million individuals living with Parkinson’s worldwide.

Community partnerships further enrich the culture of giving. Residents engage with local groups such as Girl Scouts, support neighborhood initiatives, and participate in educational or charitable drives. Nurses Week also brought together residents who are retired nurses to share stories and celebrate their lifelong advocacy and care.

Why Blakehurst Is the Perfect Setting for Purposeful Living

Blakehurst’s warm, connected culture is supported by the community’s exceptional amenities and lifestyle offerings. Residents enjoy chef-prepared dining at multiple venues, a modern fitness and aquatic center, beautifully landscaped walking paths, a creative arts studio, lifelong learning programs, and an array of clubs and committees. These enriching elements make it easy for residents to stay active, engaged, and connected to passions they’ve nurtured throughout their lives, including giving back.

Here, wellness is viewed through a holistic lens. Opportunities for service help residents maintain a sense of purpose, strengthen social ties, and support personal growth.

Resident Traditions That Make a Meaningful Impact for Staff

Blakehurst residents also take pride in showing appreciation to the people who support their daily lives. The Employee Gift Fund, organized twice a year, offers a thoughtful, equitable way to recognize team members, especially because tipping is not permitted at the community.

Another resident-led initiative, the Blakehurst Scholarship Foundation, provides annual scholarships to employees pursuing education or training at accredited institutions. In 2025, all 52 applicants received scholarships.

“The residents care for the staff just like we care for them,” says Sherry Wilson, Director of Human Resources, who has seen firsthand how much residents invest in the well-being of those around them. “We try to have our business be more like a family, and that sense of mutual care uplifts everyone.”

Beginning in 2026, residents will also participate in a new sustainable initiative, donating gently used household items that can be offered to team members at no cost. It is a simple yet powerful way to give new life to quality items while supporting others in the community.

Giving Back Enriches Everyone

The many acts of kindness seen daily at Blakehurst create a supportive, joyful, deeply connected community, with residents contributing, creating, sharing, and uplifting one another in ways that make life richer for all.

When residents give of themselves, they gain just as much in return. They find renewed purpose, deepen relationships, and experience the powerful satisfaction of making a difference.
