Blakehurst Completes Major Campus-Wide Renovations
With its rich history, stunning 40-acre campus, and unmatched services, Blakehurst has long been the senior living community of choice for older adults in the Towson, Md. area seeking a lifestyle filled with opportunity and connection. With the completion of a $16-million renovation, the community has entered an exciting new chapter.
“Our goal has always been to enrich the lives of our residents and help them live life to the fullest,” says Lonny Blessing, Blakehurst’s Executive Director. “This renovation enhances every aspect of life in our community, from luxurious amenities to fresh new spaces that residents and their families will enjoy for years to come.”
Spaces That Elevate

The new aquatic center is already a hub of activity, offering an upgraded pool and locker rooms. Now residents have even more opportunities to stay active and build strength, as they enjoy water aerobics or a refreshing swim. “Residents are already diving in and having fun,” says Wellness Director Kayla Hill. “This space supports our focus on fitness, nutrition, active living, and well-being.”
The redesigned lobby offers a welcoming environment for both residents and guests, offering an uplifting first impression and a warm setting for casual chats with neighbors and greeting visiting friends and family members.
The renovated auditorium and activity room gives residents a modern setting for the concerts, lectures, and social gatherings that make life at Blakehurst so engaging. With improved lighting, furnishings, and décor, every event feels more polished and enjoyable.
Even everyday moments are elevated. Because the hallways and common areas now feature updated paint, carpets, and décor, walking through the community feels lighter and more welcoming — inspiring residents to explore and spend time outside their apartment homes.
Dining Designed for Choice and Connection
The recent renovations have ensured that dining at Blakehurst is now more versatile and engaging than ever.
The stunning Ridge Pub, one of the most anticipated additions, gives residents the flexibility to enjoy handcrafted meals and drinks throughout the day. Open from mid-morning to evening, the pub is designed for busy seniors who may miss traditional mealtimes due to appointments or activities. “Now, residents have a place where they can grab a bite or linger with friends whenever it fits their schedule,” explains Food & Beverage Director Steve Newcombe. With menu favorites like fresh seafood, burgers, and entrée salads, The Ridge Pub has quickly become a popular social gathering spot.

The Chesapeake Dining Room, refreshed with new furniture and lighting, offers an elegant atmosphere for fine dining. For more relaxed meals, residents can step onto the Terrace Bistro, where updated furniture and décor make outdoor dining more inviting than ever. And with the newly imagined Corner Store’s grab-and-go options, residents can take a quick meal home or pick up a snack between activities.
These updates not only expand dining choices but also strengthen one of the most important aspects of community life: sharing meals with friends and family. Whether it’s a special dinner, a casual lunch with neighbors, or takeout to enjoy in their own apartment, residents now have more ways to connect over food.
Continuous Improvement for Residents
Blakehurst’s dedication to improvement doesn’t stop with the recent $16-million renovation. The Resident Landscape & Ground Committee has been collaborating with management for more than a year on plans to make The Grove, located near the entrance to campus, more accessible and enjoyable for all. Once a popular shaded seating area, The Grove is being re-envisioned as a safe, welcoming space where residents can relax, gather, and watch the daily comings and goings of the community. Enhancements under consideration include high-visibility crosswalks, an expanded pathway with a small loop for easy strolling, and a paved seating area with both fixed benches and moveable café tables and chairs. Minimal new planting will be needed thanks to the community’s existing canopy of trees, but the addition of shade-loving perennials and groundcovers will enhance the natural beauty of the space.
Looking Ahead
Together, these renovations do more than update the buildings and grounds — they make life at Blakehurst more vibrant, flexible, and enriching for residents. From wellness and dining to entertainment and everyday convenience, every detail has been designed with the resident experience in mind.
“As the transformation continues, one thing is clear,” says Blessing. “Blakehurst isn’t just a place to retire — it’s a place to thrive, to connect, and to embrace all that life has to offer.”
